ALL - Adding Ohio's American Indian Earthworks to the World Heritage List
March 10, 2:00 pm
Large Meeting Room

Nearly 2,000 years ago, Ohio was the epicenter of an American Indian religious and cultural tradition that reached nearly two-thirds of North America. These Indigenous people designed and constructed vast ceremonial centers that are enclosed by remarkably precise geometric earthworks, and which typically align to key points in the movements of the sun and/or moon. Today, Ohio History Connection and the National Park Service, with support from American Indian Tribal nations and many others, have submitted eight of these earthworks for addition to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Join us to learn about these amazing sites, and the effort to honor them and the Ancestors who built them.

This course is led by: Jennifer Aultman is the Director of Historic Sites and Museums at the Ohio History Connection. An archaeologist, she specializes in the landscapes and colonization of the Eastern U.S. Jen also oversees the World Heritage project, an effort to inscribe eight of Ohio’s amazing American Indian earthworks to the UNESCO World Heritage List. She was previously an instructor at Otterbein University and the University of Virginia, and the Curator of Archaeological Collections at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation (Monticello). Jen lives in Westerville with her husband, Chris, and three daughters, and serves on the Westerville Board of Education.
