March 2025 KROSOCZKA VISITING MARCH 11 during National Reading Month Can you guess what the top circulating titles for 2024 were? Have your read any of these or will you now put them on your “to read” list? The top adult fiction book checked out this year was The Women by Kristin Hannah. A story of a coming of age nursing student in Vietnam in a time of great divide. A rich story of courage under fire. Second most checked out adult fiction was Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. A feel-good story exploring friendship, reckoning and hope tracing a widow’s unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus. The top non-fiction book checked out was Wise Gals by Nathalia Holt. A small cadre of influential female spies in the early days of the CIA. Second most checked out non-fiction book was Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance. Growing up in a poor Rust Belt town. A probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class. Top two juvenile graphic novels would be Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea and Big Jim Begins both by Dave Pilkey. DIRECTOR’S NOTE Gary Branson We are gearing up for the first author visit of the year. On Tuesday, March 11, Let’s Read 20 and Marion Public Library will host author/illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka at Marion Public Library. Krosoczka is an author of over forty books for young readers including his wildy popular Lunch Lady graphic novels. As an author with a full-range appeal to many different ages of readers (including reluctant readers), as well as an accomplished illustrator, he will bring a unique approach to reading, learning and connecting kids with books. His titles have become perennial favorites in homes, libraries and bookstores forover twenty years. He will offer a short program and sign books. To build connection between the author and readers, copies of the book Punk Farm and Krosoczka’s graphic novel Lunch Lady will be given out to students (while supply last) who attend the program. To kick off March’s National Reading month, Let’s Read 20 distributed Jarrett J. Krosoczka’s book - Punk Farm to all elementary and preschools in Marion County with the intention of having the book read in the classrooms on March 3 or 4th for Let’s Read 20, Marion! day. Additionally, Punk Farm is going to be the next book on the bookwalk along Marion Tallgrass Trail. To stay current and comply with the ADA accessibility requirements before the mandatory deadline in 2026, we did an update. The update makes web content more accessible to everyone. We made the move to a more modern template that changed the design and layout of the home page from the previous one. The biggest change for us, is in the back-end functionality of the website making it easier for us to serve you by managing data, processing requests, and storing information to support access. The most noticeable change to you, the patron, will be the calendar that is highlighted differently on the home page, and when clicking an event, you will find a new look to the listing. What has been added is the ability for library staff to manage registrations through the event listing. You will start to see this appear on some of our regular programs that you generally had to sign up for at the front desk. Patrons will also find they will be able to put events on their own calendars by clicking on the “add to calendar” button on the listing The new look offers a better sitemap, which makes the content of the website more findable for search engines like Google.
