“Social health is positive and generative. It’s an asset to invest in, a resource to cultivate, a source of not just surviving but also thriving. You don’t want to go through your days barely scraping by, living but not enjoying life, alive but not healthy. You want to flourish. And you can’t florish without meaningful relationships.” - from the book The Art And Science of Connection May 2025 GET SOCIAL! JOIN THE DISCUSSIONS The Art And Science of Connection by Kasley Killam Our SwoopMobile is an opportunity to better serve Marion County! In the near future you will see the SwoopMobile start to make appearances at community events. We are in the process of fitting the vehicle with the necessary hardware and equipment needed to safely accommodate the collections needed to facilitate our outreach activities. Staff are also training and working up detailed plans for how this additional service works into the overall picture of library services, programs and staffing needs. We will be updating our Marion Library.org/outreach webpage as we finalize plans in the coming months. Keep track of our progress on our website and soial media. Look for the SwoopMobile coming to a location near you! Special thank you goes out to our dear BookMark Friends of Marion Public Library, who are supporters of the many projects, programs and services we do here at Marion Public Library. MarionLibrary.org/outreach DIRECTOR’S NOTE Gary Branson What is your Social Health Type? Are you a Butterfly, an Evergreen, a Wallflower, or a Firefly? Are your social habits frequent or infrequent? Are your connections casual or deep? In this book Killam shares that most people fall into one of these category types with their social health. Each has their own connection preferences and habits. She shares the characteristics of the different categories and where they fall on the social spectrum. In the book, she goes on to give guidelines on how to strengthen your “social muscles.” One of the main messages of the book is that social health is as important as physical and mental health. Connection is like exercise. We should take steps to be socially healthy. She gives ways and real-world situations on how to stretch, rest, tone or flex in your connections.
