Reliving the Crystal Lake Years
March 22 and 29 @ 10:00 am
Large Meeting Room
CRYSTAL LAKE AMUSEMENT PARK, located north of Marion on SR 4, began as a quarry before being converted in 1922 to a swimming facility and in 1925 became an amusement park complete with roller coaster, carousel, airplane swing, and a dance pavilion large enough to hold 1,000 couples. Following the start of the Great Depression in 1929, the park changed its focus to dance bands and related entertainment. Numerous transformations took place over the next 40 years including the conversion of the dance pavilion to a roller rink and later to one of the first Rink’s Bargain City discount stores. Over 100 vintage photographs will be included in the presentation.
This course is led by: Randy Winland is a retired educator whose interest in his adopted home town of Marion has led him to collecting and sharing “Marion Memories.” He has authored four books on the history of Marion and Marion County including his most recent publication of Moments and Memories of Marion County History. In 2017, he was presented the OLHA Individual Achievement Award in recognition of his many years of service to the collection, preservation, and sharing of the history of Marion County.
