Be Enlightened Within the Dark of the Moon’s Shadow: Great American Eclipse of 2024
Thursday, November 2 & Friday, November 3 @ 2:00 pm

Session One: (Sarah McNamee)
Next Spring, all eyes will be on the sky in Ohio! For the first time since 1806, our state will experience a total solar eclipse and Marion County is in the path of totality. Come find out what to expect, what Marion Co Emergency Management Association of Ohio is planning, and how to best witness this once in a lifetime event!

Session Two: (Robert Harmon)
A total eclipse of the Sun is one of nature's wonders, an eerily majestic show that you won't want to miss. In this talk, we’ll
discuss what to expect during April’s eclipse and how best to view it; about the beautiful outer layers of the Sun that are only visible during total eclipses; why solar eclipses can only occur during a new Moon, while lunar eclipses require a full Moon; why we don’t have eclipses at every new and full Moon; and more!

Each 1hr course is led by:
Sarah McNamee and Robert Harmon
Sarah is in her 8th year as the Marion County EMA Director. She currently serves on the Ohio Hazmat TAC and is the current Vice President of the Emergency Management Association of Ohio. Sarah is a graduate of The Ohio State University, Sarah holds a BA in International Relations and Diplomacy, and is also a volunteer firefighter.

Robert is Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ohio Wesleyan University. He earned a B.S. in Astronomy at Case Western Reserve University and a Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Chicago. Before coming to Ohio Wesleyan in 1999,Harmon taught at Washington College and Randolph Macon College and was a visiting researcher at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. At Ohio Wesleyan he enjoys teaching physics and astronomy courses for students majoring within his department, as well as those majoring in other fields, and is a recipient of OWU's Sherwood Dodge Shankland Award for the Encouragement of Teachers. His research program focuses on stellar magnetic fields and their manifestation in the form of dark "starspots" in their surface layers.
